Gradescope

Gradescope

Gradescope is a feedback and assessment tool that reduces the time associated with grading exams, homework, and other assignments.

It is widely used for delivering assessments remotely and enables instructors and graders to provide better and more timely feedback, resulting in improved learning outcomes. View more info on how to sync Gradescope with your course.

Canvas Integration

We recommend adding Gradescope to the course navigation for easier instructor and student access.  It may also serve as a reminder to students that you are using Gradescope within your course.

  1. Click on Settings for your course navigation menu.
  1. Click the Navigation tab.
  1. Find Gradescope in the list of disabled items (the bottom list in this page).
  1. Click the three-dot menu (⋮) next to Gradescope.
  1. Click Enable.
  1. Scroll to the bottom of the page and click Save.
Note: You may (optionally) remove this after you have configured Gradescope for your course if you would prefer your students only access Gradescope through modules or assignments.

  1. Click on Gradescope from your Course Navigation pane to launch Gradescope.
  2. A dialog box will appear that asks you to link to a new or existing Gradescope course. Link to a new course. This will create a Gradescope course that you can use in conjunction with and links to your Canvas course.
Note: If this is your first time using Gradescope with your TAMU email, link with “A new Gradescope Course”. This will create a new Gradescope account. If you already have a Gradescope account under your TAMU email, a new Gradescope account will not be created for you, and clicking the Gradescope link in Canvas will take you to your existing account.

  1. Once you have updated your settings from the Course Settings page, click Update Course.
In order to add your students to your Gradescope course, you will need to sync your Canvas roster. You may need to repeat this process if students join your course later.
  1. From the course navigation menu in Canvas, click on Gradescope.
  2. Click Roster in the left hand menu.
  3. Click Sync Canvas Roster.
  4. In the Sync with Canvas Roster window, you may optionally check "Let new users know..." and click Sync Roster.
    • We recommend you communicate with your students in some fashion before you allow Gradescope to email them. That is, we recommend you uncheck this box, unless you have already talked to your students about Gradescope.
In order for Gradescope to communicate with your Canvas course, you will create an Assignment in Canvas with the following settings:
  1. Choose External Tool as the Submission Type.
  2. Click Find to open the Configure External Tool window.
  3. Scroll through the list to find Gradescope and click on it.
  4. Click on Select.
  5. (optional) Load this Tool In A New Tab if your assignments are particularly long or complex.
  6. Finish creating your assignment as you normally would.
  7. Click Save. (It's best not to publish the assignment until after you also create it in Gradescope so that students get full information and are less likely to get conflicting or missing information.)
    • You will need to return to publish your assignment later before you can post grades to Canvas from Gradescope. It is best practice to publish your assignment in Canvas (with the proper due dates) as early as reasonable, so that students can use Canvas' calendar, to-do, scheduling, and reminder features.
You will now be taken to Gradescope where you can create the details of the assignment.
After you have created the assignment in Canvas, now it is time to create it in Gradescope. Canvas will automatically direct you to Gradescope to begin creating your assignment. If not, click on Gradescope from the Course Navigation menu and click on Assignments from the left-hand menu.

For guidance on how to create an assignment in Gradescope, refer to Gradescope’s Getting Started Documentation.
In order for Gradescope to communicate with your Canvas assignment, you will link the Assignment in Canvas with the following settings:
  1. From the course navigation, click on Gradescope and select Assignments from the left-hand menu.
  2. Click on an assignment to access it.
  3. From the left-hand menu, click on Settings.
  4. Under the Canvas assignment section, click Link.
  5. In the pop-up menu that appears, select the Canvas assignment from the dropdown to link. Then click Link Assignment.
After you have graded within Gradescope, you can send the grades to your Canvas gradebook.
  1. From the course navigation in Canvas, click on Gradescope, then click Assignments at the left and the name of the assignment from the list.
  2. Click on Review Grades from the assignment menu on the left-hand side.
  3. Click Post Grades to Canvas from the menu bar at the bottom.
  4. In the Post Grades to Canvas window, click Edit under Linked Canvas Assignment.
  5. The window will not change to a drop down list of your assignments in the linked Canvas course. This may take a few moments.
  6. Click on the drop down menu and select the assignment in Canvas that this Gradescope assignment should post its grades to.
  7. Click Link Assignment.
    1. You may need to repeat steps 1, 2, and 3 after linking the assignments.
  8. Click Post Grades.
  9. Wait until you see the message ✓ Grades successfully posted to Canvas!.
  10. Click Close.
If you need to synchronize the grades from Gradescope to Canvas again later (such as after handling regrade requests), repeat steps 1 through 3 in the above process.
